Kant wrote his social and political philosophy in order to champion the Enlightenment in general and the idea of freedom in particular. His work came within both the natural law and the social contract traditions. Kant held that every rational being had both an innate right to freedom and a duty to enter into a civil condition governed by a social contract in order to realize and preserve that freedom.

Hegel, Philosophy of History, pdf Ebook

Hegel Philosophy of History, pdf Ebook downloads. Historical progress coincides with the development of human reason. Hegel accepts that it we are to think of human historical processes as progressing towards a rational end. Much of the Philosophy of History is taken up with a survey of the histories of different cultures and nations, with the aim of the case that it is possible to discern distinct stages of rational development.

There is, however, a crucial epistemological difference between Kant and Hegel. Kant is careful in setting out what he takes to be the limits of knowledge we can have of the possible ends towards which processes in the empirical world are headed. This includes the historical processes we think of as unfolding among human beings. There, he claims that we are justified in making reflective judgments — but not determinant judgments — concerning natural ends Kant , p. In reflective judgments, we employ our reason in a regulative capacity.

When we do this, we can be entitled to proceed as if a given proposition were true, even if we cannot prove that it is true. This mode of judgment is justified especially when doing so can serve important practical ends. Reflective judgments can include judgments about the ends of humankind. We cannot strictly speaking prove that a the development of the human species over the course of its history along rational lines, culminating in a just civil constitution, is in fact its ultimate end.

But this does not mean that we are without justification in proceeding as if this were in fact its ultimate end. Quite typically of his philosophy more generally, Hegel differs from Kant in his degree of epistemological caution. Hegel does not rest content with the claim that we are justified in proceeding as if history proceeded towards a rational end, but advances the more controversial claim that we can actually know that it does.

In The Philosophy of History, he writes:. The only Thought which Philosophy brings with it to the contemplation of History, is the simple conception of Reason; that Reason is the Sovereign of the World; that the history of the world, therefore, presents us with a rational process. This conviction and intuition is a hypothesis in the domain of history as such. In that of Philosophy it is no hypothesis. It is there proved by speculative cognition, that Reason — and this term may here suffice us, without investigating the relation sustained by the Universe to the Divine Being — is Substance, as well as Infinite Power; its own Infinite Material underlying all the natural and spiritual life which it originates, as also the Infinite Form — that which sets this Material in motion.

On the one hand, Reason is the substance of the Universe; viz. On the other hand, it is the Infinite Energy of the Universe…. Hegel ,pp. Hegel takes himself on solid ground in claiming that attributes of thought — such as rationality — can be known to be attributes of the empirical world, including historical processes unfolding within it. He believes that this claim follows from the ontology that he advocates in various of his works, according to which reason is actually what makes up reality.

On this view, there is held to be no sharp distinction between rational thought and entities existing in the empirical world. Kant, I.

Don't have an account? Kantian education is necessarily a moral one that seeks to instill cosmopolitan dispositions within his students, despite being aware that an external transformation as provided by proper education cannot facilitate an internal change due to the human capacity for free will. Regardless, education for Kant is about realization—that one of his definitions of a human being is an educated one.

Objective When modern economics was born in the 18th century, Adam Smith made it a historical study of man and the rising commercial society. For Smith, economics is first and foremost concerned with wealth-creation, where the division of labor is the key organizing principle. In the next century, David Ricardo shifted the focus of economics from production to distribution.

Although it is a little known fact beyond the world of Kant scholars, the last book Kant published in his lifetime was titled Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View. This subject was thus very prominent in his work as a practicing philosopher. And yet until recently, the anthropological part of his corpus has been for the most part overlooked both within and outside Kantian circles.
