This method is known as the method of composite parts. A key part to this process that was not present in centroid calculations is the adjustment for position. As discussed on the previous pages, the area and mass moments of inertia are dependent upon the chosen axis of rotation. Moments of inertia for the parts of the body can only be added when they are taken about the same axis. The moments of inertia in the table are generally listed relative to that shape's centroid though.

Mass Moment of Inertia and Area Moment of Inertia – Applications, Differences, and Units

Area moments of inertia are used in engineering mechanics courses to determine a bodies resistance to bending loads or torsional loads. Specifically, the area moment of inertia refers to the second, area, moment integral of a shape, with I xx representing the moment of inertia about the x axis, I yy representing the moment of inertia about the y axis, and J zz also called the polar moment of inertia representing the moment of inertia about the z axis. The moment of inertia about each axis represents the shapes resistance to a moment applied about that respective axis. Moments about the x and y axes would tend to bend an object, while moments about the z axis would tend to twist the body.

The first step to calculate moment of inertia for a mass is to establish the location of the X, Y, and Z axes. The accuracy of the calculations and later on the accuracy of the measurements to verify the calculations will depend entirely on the wisdom used in choosing the axes. Theoretically, these axes can be at any location relative to the object being considered, provided the axes are mutually perpendicular. However, in real life, unless the axes are chosen to be at a location that can be accurately measured and identified, the moment of inertia calculations are meaningless.
