How We See In the eye, refraction occurs when light passes from the air to the cornea, from the cornea to the aqueous humor, from the aqueous humor to the lens and from the lens to the vitreous humor. Light spreading out from one point on an object can therefore be focused on a particular point on the retina. The wavelengths can be detected by the light-sensitive cells called rods and cones present in the eye.

Cornea - The cornea is the transparent membrane which forms the outer coating at the front of the eyeball and covers the iris and pupil. It also focuses light on the retina. Retina - is the light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eye. Rays of light enter the eye and are focused on the retina by the cornea and lens. The retina produces an image which is sent along the optic nerve for the brain to interpret.

Lens - a transparent body behind the iris. The lens bends light rays so that they form a clear image at the back of the eye — on the retina. As the lens is elastic, it can change shape, getting fatter to focus close objects and thinner for distant objects.

Sound is a Pressure Wave

Sound , a mechanical disturbance from a state of equilibrium that propagates through an elastic material medium. A purely subjective definition of sound is also possible, as that which is perceived by the ear, but such a definition is not particularly illuminating and is unduly restrictive, for it is useful to speak of sounds that cannot be heard by the human ear, such as those that are produced by dog whistles or by sonar equipment. The study of sound should begin with the properties of sound waves. There are two basic types of wave, transverse and longitudinal, differentiated by the way in which the wave is propagated. In a transverse wave , such as the wave generated in a stretched rope when one end is wiggled back and forth, the motion that constitutes the wave is perpendicular, or transverse, to the direction along the rope in which the wave is moving. An important family of transverse waves is generated by electromagnetic sources such as light or radio , in which the electric and magnetic fields constituting the wave oscillate perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

A vibrating tuning fork is capable of creating such a longitudinal wave. As the tines of the fork vibrate back and forth, they push on neighboring air particles. The forward motion of a tine pushes air molecules horizontally to the right and the backward retraction of the tine creates a low-pressure area allowing the air particles to move back to the left. Because of the longitudinal motion of the air particles, there are regions in the air where the air particles are compressed together and other regions where the air particles are spread apart. These regions are known as compressions and rarefactions respectively.
