When we were small we floated quite naturally, drifting on the currents with grace and ease, but one day we saw the shiny rocks glinting on the sea floor and we were curious, so we swam down and brought one back to the surface. The rock was beautiful, interesting and new and we enjoyed playing with it. That rock was the first thought.

As years went on we kept gathering rocks, filling our pockets until it was a struggle to stay afloat, such was the weight we carried, and yet over the years we had come to rely on those rocks, to see them as necessary for our survival, and we spent our days looking through them, hoping to find the right one, the rock that would bring us happiness.

Then one day we grew so tired of struggling to stay afloat that we started to set some rocks down. And as we let those rocks go we felt the current lifting us, we looked up for the first time in years, saw the clouds and the mountains and we felt ourselves breathing. We looked down and saw that the rocks were still there when we wanted to play with them, drifting on the sand, but we sensed that letting the weight go was what we needed. We found that we did not need to let go of the rocks, that they drifted down by themselves when we stopped obsessing over them.

If a snake was to keep all it skins, from birth until death, it would find its life very uncomfortable. It would struggle and suffer, smothered in a thousand blankets of its own making, lost, confused and solemn. Each layer is an identity, a something the snake once inhabited, lived and celebrated, and when that cloak is used it is discarded and left to return to the earth, an endless flow of life, love and delight. Your ideas, thoughts and beliefs are like the skins the snake has discarded, except that you have not, you cling to them like precious objects, holding them, organising them, protecting them as if it would be a great loss to leave them behind.

And when the crusty detritus of old belief and opinion is threatened we humans huddle around them, cradling them in our protective embrace. But why? We have become confused, so identified with the layers of mind that we see them as parts of ourselves, so when layers are threatened, I am threatened, when opinions are contradicted, I am at risk of losing something precious. Imagine the snake guarding its pile of old flaking skins while it starves, food and water dancing past as the poor reptile coils tighter on its treasure, missing everything that matters to protect something that will return to the dust any moment.

We would pity such a creature, confused and detached from its true nature, its inner purpose. We would shake our heads and leave the poor wretch to its junk, and then we would find a belief contradicted by reality and we would rail against it.

Your beauty and your divinity are not reliant on those layers of thought, belief and identity. The delight that you are radiates brighter than the midday sun, more beautiful than the first evening star. It is FROM that beauty and that perfection that the layers arise, birthed out of the perfect Awareness that is looking through these eyes, that is reading these words…now. The fact that you got lost in the thoughts does not mean they are YOU.

Thoughts come like raindrops, but you? You are the clouds, and you are the sun and the wind and the mountains. You are their source, never their servant. And yet those thoughts will tell you to improve yourself, to better yourself, that there is something wrong with that self, the self that exists as a thought floating in that inner space, watched by Awareness. Look deep inside and notice that you are the watcher, not the watched. Notice that something in you has never changed and never will.

What if tomorrow was a far off land whose affairs were governed by another, a place whose business was of no concern to you? And what if yesterday was so ancient, so primordial that even the sun and the moon could scarcely remember it? Would you study it with such fervour? Would you cradle it with tender attention or would you know it as no business of yours, as water so far downstream as to be beyond your care?

Friend, your life is not a stack of yesterdays, one on the other, nor is it a catalogue of tomorrows to be selected and brought forth. Your life is a wild thing which stalks along the precipice between was and will be, always here, alert, ready to pounce. That is where you abide, the sight that sees this and nothing else, the noticer of this step, this breath. With your head jammed between the stacks of those yesterdays and your hands leafing through the catalogues of tomorrows you miss the thing you seek through all that grasping, the one thing you can never grab.

You cannot be found, improved, discovered, you can only wake up out of your dreaming and know yourself as you are. And so dear friend, will you for a moment those yesterdays and tomorrows, those imaginings which hold more sway than your actual life? Will you step with me onto this ledge without rails, this vast expanse of nothingness and delight? HERE is the place we meet as old friends, no wedge of separation between us, no barrier that would keep us apart.

An emotion that is allowed to be will process itself. Ignore the stories that arise around it, the actions it demands.

Allow the mud to settle and the clarity to return, then see what action is needed, what makes sense in the moment. I was sitting quietly the other day, trying to be present and failing miserably.

My attention was all over the place, wandering between stories and thoughts and from past to future. A feeling of peace. I remembered what I tell other people in my sessions — that your job is not to feel good or to have a quiet mind — Your job is to notice where your attention is going and to keep bringing it back to Now.

What a relief! And with that clarity I relaxed into the feelings of stress and worry. I watched the stories as best I could. And although I was still getting distracted I knew I was back on the path.

They think they know what the world should look like, what other people should do and how everything should happen. Reality has its own rules, its own way of playing and its own ideas about what needs to happen next.

Living this instant means living instinctively, responding to the moment as it arises, free of fear and desire. This is easy to say, but harder to do, and in this live class Oli shares his best tips and tools for coming back into alignment with your inner intuition.

This is what we seek when we meditate, and yet it is what we are. I was sitting in my car last week, on the way home from the supermarket when I noticed something curious. The voice in my head was there, the voice that says that green is better than red, that moving towards my destination is better than sitting still.

Then Eckhart spoke, and it was as if he was looking through my windscreen:. I have probably heard these words, or words like them hundreds of times before, but somehow in that moment this simple phrase raised a question that I had not considered:. Will I prioritise moving fast, getting somewhere, trying to push reality around?

Or will I just be here and enjoy what is? Sometimes it can seem as if just being will leave us stuck, trapped in unsatisfactory conditions, and I was worried, subconsciously, that allowing what is might prevent me from improving my situation. On the other hand I could see that no amount of frustration would make the light turn green, and also I wondered, was it really better to be moving than still? All thought stopped and in that moment I was free. Free of the urge to hurry, which is driven by the belief in an imaginary future.

Free of the frustration of the light turning red, which is rooted in the imagined past, no more than a memory. And free of the identity of a man in a hurry, of a person waiting for something, free of all those burdens. The light went green and I drove on, continuing with my day, but as I moved there was a new rhythm at work, or maybe at play.

Everything moved in its own time, steadily, calm and connected, beautiful and peaceful, and my day was filled with that peaceful stillness. Email address:.
