The following list represents the better and more informative of the books general, but not necessarily nontechnical which are available and can be obtained from local public or university libraries and bookstores.

The publications listed are not available from the Smithsonian library, education department, or research departments. A guide to recommended web sites follows the book-list sections. Numerous regional guides are also available. We list only a few examples. State guides are usually scientifically accurate and are recommended if you wish details on your amphibians and reptiles.

Although some of the following links offer information on herpetoculture amphibians and reptiles , our staff discourages the keeping of amphibians and reptiles as pets.

We believe that commerce in amphibians and reptiles has and continues to decimate the populations of many herp species. Further, the shipping and maintenance of these animals in the pet trade regularly shows little concern for their health and welfare. Most herpetological societies provide their members with some sort of publication, ranging from monthly newsletters to highly technical journals.

The following list emphasizes the technical periodicals written in English. A technical journal, published quarterly, with original papers on all aspects of herpetology, short articles on new methods and ideas, and a section on book reviews.
